In accordance with EPA guidelines, it is necessary in most states to make periodic inspections on UST's to ensure they are not leaking into our groundwater.
By the end of 1998 , with the exception of Florida which had more stringent regulations, all tanks were expected to be upgraded to "New tank standards". This included new tank installations, tank lining and tank inspection or lining combined with Impressed Current Cathodic Protection systems.
Federal regulations dictate that all lined tanks without an impressed current cathodic protection systems must be internally inspected after the first 10 years of service after lining and every 5 years thereafter to ensure the tank lining is holding up as designed. Some states require tank lining inspections in conjunction with cathodic protection.
Additionally, most states will require interior inspections on tanks when they have failed to maintain proper record keeping of their Cathodic Protection System.
Once the tank has been uncovered in a small area on top of ground, they are then aerated to create a safe working environment. Once the tank has been deemed safe, it is accessed by cutting approximately an 18" x 18" opening in the top. Tank sludge is removed, cleaned and the tank is inspected in accordance with API 1631 standards. An ultrasonic tester is also utilized to check for wall thickness of original tank and or lining.
